On January 29, 2013, and emergency meeting was called at the direction of 10 members of CASG Caucus. Between the calling of the meeting and start of the meeting, information had been presented to the President which would change the nature of the motion on the table. Originally, the motion was – amongst other things – calling into question the validity of the contract of the Vice President (Internal) – Sarah McCue. However, the information presented would eventually absolve the Vice President (Internal) of any wrong doing.

The CASG Executive wish to extend their sincerest apologies to the Vice President (Internal), as any accusations of wrong doing have been fully investigated, and dropped.

“This agreement with the Canadian Federation of Students will ensure that the student movement is alive and well at Carleton University” said CASG President, Andrew Kwai. “We will pick up where CUSA has failed and continue to fight for lower tuition fees. This progressive movement will allow us to stand in solidarity with several other universities not only in Ontario, but across Canada.”

The Carleton University Students’ Association in conjunction with the Carleton Academic Student Government would like to thank all the participants and attendees of Carleton University’s second edition of TEDx Talks.

The TEDx Talks took place on March 20th and featured independent presentations from three students and two faculty members. One hundred students, staff and faculty were able to witness the event live along with countless others who tuned in to watch the live stream.

Under TEDx Talk rules and regulations the first two shows are limited to an audience of one hundred people. After these two trial session the next series of talks can feature a larger audience and a greater number of speakers.

It is the hope of CUSA and CASG that this event will continue to grow and become a fixture of the Carleton University community. The event itself highlights the intellectual and creative abilities of Carleton’s students and staff. By hosting TEDx, CUSA and CASG have demonstrated their continued commitment to highlighting the dedication of its members to Carleton University and to the greater community as well.

CUSA President Alexander Golovko and CASG President Andrew Kwai would like to extend a special congratulations to the great talks provided by the five speakers; Trevor Deley “A Selfless Good Deed”, Dr. Rena Bivens “Why Gender Matters in Social Media Design”, Chris Sauve “The Habits of Highly Boring People, Michael Chacho “Brands Beyond Different” and Dr. Steven Cooke, “Fishing for the Future”.

CUSA and CASG would also like to give a special thank you to Dr. Kim Matheson, the Vice-President (Research and International) and her office, particularly Julie Carl, for all their advice and support throughout the planning and implementation process.

CUSA and CASG will submit the recording of the talks in the coming days, once received TED will review the results and notify CUSA and CASG of their decision.

It’s hard to believe that another month has already gone by and exams are right around the corner. I would like to start off by once again thanking all our representatives who showed up to committees this month, and attended our last council meeting. While it may be hard to see sometimes, the work and hours you put in really does help create a better Carleton for our students.

At our last council meeting, we made a significant change to our bylaws, allowing council members to send proxies in their absence. This is a great step forward, as it will help increase representation, and ensure that no department goes unrepresented. On that note, there are still many seats that need to get filled, so check out http://www.casg.ca/council/student-representatives/ for a list of vacancies.

We’re still working hard on our ongoing projects, specifically TEDxCarletonU and a Fall Break for 2013. It looks like we’ll have everything finalized for TEDx by the start of January, so check our website often for updates. A call for auditions for speakers will go out shortly, and we’re looking for talented undergrads to present on topics they are passionate about.

As for what our future holds, scholarships will be back, along with a discussion panel to inform students about the potential Fall Break that the Senate will vote on at the end of January. We’re also planning to run a campaign or two in the New Year, so stay tuned for more information as we head into 2013.

Best of luck to all who are finishing up assignments and studying for midterms! Enjoy your well-deserved holidays and see you in 2013!

Sincerely,
